What is a lab diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a genuine diamond that is not mined from the earth but grown under controlled conditions in a laboratory. The difference lies solely in the process of formation—the result is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds are made of pure carbon, crystallize in the cubic crystal system, and achieve the same degree of hardness (10 on the Mohs scale). They sparkle just as intensely, exhibit the same light refraction, and are characterized by the same durability as their natural counterparts.

How are lab diamonds made?

Modern technology makes it possible to grow diamonds under laboratory conditions. There are two recognized methods for this:

1. HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)

In the high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) process, the diamond seed is exposed to extreme temperatures and pressures. As the carbon melts, a diamond forms around the seed. After cooling, the result is a diamond as beautiful as a natural diamond.

2. CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

In chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a tiny diamond "seed" is heated to a high temperature in a tightly sealed chamber. The chamber is then filled with a carbon-rich gas mixture, including methane, and then ionized into plasma using technology. Ionization breaks molecular bonds in gases, and the diamond seeds slowly crystallize.

Both processes result in high-quality, certified gemstones.
